Solo recital programmes to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Debussy's birth
1862 was a breakthrough year for both Western Classical music and Japan. Claude Debussy, who opened a window and breathed fresh air into Western Classical music was born in 1862, the year the first Japanese Embassy opened in Europe. Following this and the Paris Exposition in 1889 the Orient became increasingly fashionable in the Western World, with composers and artists alike taking inspiration from this mysterious and exotic world.
Debussy was particularly fascinated with Japanese art forms, and used this influence to shape his compositions. He moved away from the rigid forms previously used, towards a more fluid and natural sound, reflecting the sounds of our environment and the more striking sounds of the East.
From rigid musical language to true freedom. From Japanese isolation to an historical opening to the world.
